Proper training, high quality tools, and equipment are required to safely and properly remove earwax. Audiologists Praise Chow and Charles Fontaine are certified by the College of Speech and Hearing of BC (CSHBC) to practise cerumen management, and have extensive experience. At Elevate Hearing, we have a special procedure room equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and instruments to safely and effectively remove earwax.
Note that not everyone requires earwax removal. For most people the ear canal is self-cleaning, and earwax comes out on its own. However, when the ear produces excessive amounts or when the earwax causes a temporary hearing loss, removal will be required.
Do not try this at home! These procedures must be conducted by trained professionals!
Microsuction: Involves using an ENT microscope (“micro”) and suction machine (“suction”), and appropriately-sized microsuction tubes to gently remove earwax
Microsuction allows safe removal of earwax that sits deep in the ear canal
Instrumentation: Manual removal of ear wax using instruments, for example:
Stainless steel tools with metal loop or small spoon/curette on the end
Forceps used to “grab” onto earwax or a foreign body in the ear canal
Important Tip : Please do not insert Qtips into your ear canals. It could push the wax in further and possibly cause impacted earwax and a temporary hearing loss. As the saying goes: “Nothing smaller than your elbow in your ear”.
